Farm and Forest Soils
New Hampshire's best agricultural soils cover only 380,000 acres, or 6.6%, of the state and are widely scattered in relatively small pockets. About 4% of the best soils have been lost to roads and highways, and another 12% have changed to urban land uses. That means that about 60,000 acres statewide is now unavailable for food and forage production.
